In Zoom, you have two audio considerations—your microphone and your speaker.
Microphone
During a Zoom meeting, move your mouse to display the menu at the bottom of the Zoom meeting. The leftmost icon is your microphone. There are three (3) possible icons - Mute, Unmute, or Join Audio.
- A microphone without a line (Mute) indicates that your microphone is live
- A microphone with a line through it (Unmute) indicates that your microphone is muted
- A headset with a green arrow (Join Audio) indicates that you did not join computer audio. You will not hear anything from the meeting, and others in the meeting will not hear you
To mute and unmute, click on the microphone icon to toggle your microphone on or off. Note: when your microphone is muted, you can also press and hold your spacebar to temporarily unmute.
To Join Computer Audio, click on Join Audio and select Join Computer Audio to hear and be heard.

Conversely, if you need to leave computer audio because there is someone else in the Zoom meeting who is also physically close to you, and there is audio feedback:
- Mute your microphone first
- Click on the arrow to the right of the microphone icon
- Select Leave Computer Audio
Adjusting Volume
To adjust audio (microphone or speaker) after joining a meeting, click on the up arrow to the right of the microphone icon and select the bottom menu item (Audio Settings). You can switch to other available devices, test the devices, and manually adjust volume with the slide bars.

Speaker
If you test your speaker in Zoom, and you are not hearing the playback, you may need to select a different speaker or check your speaker volume on your computer.
- Click the up arrow on the right side of your taskbar.
- Select the speaker icon
- Adjust the slide bar to adjust the volume.
