1. Ethical Principles

Shaped by the Catholic Benedictine heritage, The College of St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) of The College of St. Scholastica (CSS) is guided by the ethical principles for research involving human subjects stated in the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research report entitled Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research (The Belmont Report). CSS specifically recognizes the Belmont Report’s principles of respect for persons, beneficence (including minimization of harms and maximization of benefits), and justice and applies these principles in all research covered by these policies and procedures.

In addition, all CSS conducted research must meet the requirements stated in Title 45, Part 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations (45 CFR §46). Any research involving products regulated by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must meet the requirements of 45 CFR 46 and FDA regulations for protecting human subjects, 21 CFR §50 and §56.
