Separation of Employment

Issued By: Human Resources

Effective Date: April 1973

Revised: July 1978; March 1983; October 1986; July 1990; May 1995; December 2009

Regardless of the reason for separation, all employees must meet with their supervisor to return keys, staff ID card, parking permit, and other College property.  The most recent version of the form can be found in the supervisor toolkit on my.CSS.

In addition, employees must meet with Human Resources to receive information on employee benefits, vacation leave accruals and date of last paycheck.

Voluntary Termination

Employees are expected to give reasonable advance notice prior to their resignation from the College. Requested notification is as follows:

  • Hourly staff - at least two weeks prior to the last working day
  • Salaried staff - at least one month prior to the last working day
  • Vice presidents - at least three months' notice but preferably six months' notice prior to the last working day

Position Elimination

If it’s determined that the College needs to eliminate positions due to a reduction in force, staff will be notified and no longer expected to work after the notification unless an extension is approved by the division VP.  Extensions are approved only in certain circumstances.

Involuntary Termination

Dismissal necessitated by misconduct or poor performance becomes effective immediately upon the determination of the facts. While such determination is being made, the employee may be suspended without pay. An employee who has been suspended and is later reinstated to good standing will receive regular compensation for the period of suspension.
