Staff employees are classified as follows:

  • A full-time staff employee is one who works 40 hours per week and at least nine months per year. These employees are benefits eligible.
  • A part-time staff employee is one who works less than 40 hours per week and at least nine months per year. These employees may be eligible for some benefits.
  • A seasonal employee is one who is hired by the College in an assistant coach capacity during a specific sporting season. They are not benefits eligible.
  • A casual employee is one who is hired by the College to work variable and irregular hours on an as-needed basis and is not benefits eligible.
  • A specific term employee is one who is hired by the College to work for a specific period of time of at least nine months. These employees may be benefits eligible. Note: Individuals providing services through temporary staffing agencies are not considered employees of the College and are not eligible for benefits. Employees are further classified based on their job function's designation under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Human Resources is responsible for classifying all employees according to the law's provisions. Under this Act:
  • Salaried staff is employees holding positions determined as being exempt from the FLSA minimum wage and overtime provisions. Salaried staff are paid on a salary basis and do not receive overtime pay.
  • Professional non-exempt staff is employees who would normally be determined as being exempt from FLSA minimum wage and overtime provisions but due to part-time status do not meet the salary test. Professional non-exempt staff are paid on an hourly basis and receive overtime for hours worked in excess of 40 in any given workweek.
  • Hourly staff is employees holding positions that qualify as non-exempt under the FLSA minimum wage and overtime provisions. They are paid on an hourly basis and receive overtime for hours worked in excess of 40 in any given workweek.
